Day 1 Teheran - Gorgan
You travel by private car along the Caspian coast. It is a beautiful drive between the sea and the mountains. In the evening you arrive in Gorgan. The capital of Golestan. In the Middle Ages this city was famous for its pottery. Be sure to visit the bustling bazaar. You may be able to see some Turkmen nomadic women here in their colorful dresses and headscarves. Near the bazaar you will find the Friday Mosque with a minaret from the Seljuk period. Not far away is the medieval tower of Imam Zadeh Nur.
Day 2 Gorgan - Golestan National Park
Today you travel to the largest nature reserve in Iran, the Golestan National Park. It is home to bears, jackals, gazelles, deer, boar, ibex and the Persian leopard. The latter is the largest leopard species in the world, and also one of the rarest.
Day 3 Golestan National Park
You have the whole day to visit the national park. From your lodge you can organize various hikes or visit the Solukli wetlands. You can also learn more about the culture of the Turkmen nomads who roam the region and live in yurts.
Day 4 Golestan - Mashad via Gonbad
En route to Mashad you can visit the minaret of Gonbade Kavus, one of the architectural highlights of Iran. This building is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It is not guaranteed that you can enter the tower itself as it still has a military function, but sometimes the soldiers let curious tourists take a quick look inside this imposing building that dates from the 11th century.
Day 5 Mashad
Mashad is the holiest city in the country. The name means “the city of martyrs. " This is the place where Emam Reza, the 8th grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, died. His mausoleum is visited by many pilgrims. Officially, non-believers cannot go in, but often you can manage to enter the courtyard of the complex. Entering the holiest places, however, is officially banned. Other points of interest in Mashad are the tomb of Shah Nader and Gombad -e Sabz (the green dome).
Day 6 Mashad / excursion Nishapur and Tus
Outside Mashad you can visit Tus, the city of Firdousi, one of the most famous Persian poets. He wrote the epic Shah-name, the Book of Kings, over 30 years. It consists of 50,000 verses. A little further away is Nishapur, home of the other great Persian poet, Omar Khayam. You can visit the mausoleum of this great master. You will spend the night in Mashhad.
